Effective July 1, 2026, Shift4 consolidated separate annual charges into a single $2,000 Annual Service & Maintenance Fee, billed on the August cycle according to merchant reports, LinkedIn discussion, and Merchant Cost Consulting coverage.
For restaurants and retailers on SkyTab and related Shift4 stacks in Northeast Ohio, that is not "maintenance" the way an HVAC contract is maintenance. It is a fixed $2,000 hit whether August was your best month or your slowest.
What changed
Shift4 did not invent annual fees. What changed is the size and packaging:
- Two or more prior annual fees were replaced with one $2,000 Annual Service & Maintenance Fee
- Effective date reported as July 1, 2026
- Billing often lands in August, which is peak patio and festival season for many Ohio restaurants, exactly when operators are least interested in reading fine print
If you only watch swipe rate, you will miss this until the deposit is short or the PDF arrives with a four-digit charge.
Why $2,000 hurts restaurants
Restaurant margins in Cleveland, Akron, and Canton are already thin. Labor, food cost, and rent move faster than processing contracts. A $2,000 annual fee works out to about $167 a month before interchange, auth fees, or tip adjustment noise. It is unrelated to volume, so a quiet January still paid for "maintenance." And annual fees are easy to forget after year one, which is how they keep sticking.
Owners in Facebook restaurant groups have been blunt about it. The complaint is not "I refuse to pay for software." It is "I was not sold a $2,000 line item when I signed."
How this interacts with POS lock-in
Shift4's pitch is often hardware, payments, and software as one stack. That is convenient on day one and expensive on day 400 if the economics drift.
Before you rip a terminal off the counter, separate three decisions:
- Processing rate and fees (what this article is about)
- POS software (menus, KDS, online ordering)
- Hardware ownership or lease
You can sometimes re-rate processing without throwing away a working POS. Sometimes you cannot. A free statement review is how you find out which camp you are in, not a LinkedIn rumor thread.
What Ohio merchants should do now
- Find the August or July statement and search for "Annual Service," "Maintenance," or similar.
- Ask Shift4 or your ISO in writing for the fee schedule going forward, including whether $2,000 rises again in 2027.
- Recompute effective cost with the annual fee included. A "competitive" rate with a $2,000 rider is not competitive.
- Look at alternatives that do not rely on surprise annual fees: transparent interchange-plus, dual pricing, and local support that answers the phone from Chagrin Falls.
- Plan the switch timeline so you do not go dark on a Saturday night. Choosing a processor in Northeast Ohio is a process with steps, not a mood.
