Import your menu into Clover
Clover imports inventory from an Excel workbook with four tabs: Items, Modifier Groups, Categories and Tax Rates. The Menu Converter produces exactly this file; the steps below are the same for a file you built by hand from Clover's template.
Import
- Sign in to the Clover Web Dashboard on a computer.
- Open Inventory (called Items on some accounts), then Item list.
- Choose Import. Some dashboards label the button Import Your Menu Spreadsheet.
- Drag the .xlsx in, or Choose File. Do not open and re-save the file in Numbers or Google Sheets first; either can change the layout.
- Clover validates the workbook. If everything checks out you see To be added to inventory with the count of items, modifier groups and categories per tab. Confirm they match your setup guide, then continue.
- Wait for the success screen, then open the Register app on a device and pull the new inventory (it syncs on its own within a minute or two).
What an import does and does not do
- Adds, never updates. A file with no Clover IDs creates new items. Importing the same file twice creates duplicates, so import into a new or empty inventory, or delete the first batch before retrying.
- Sets names, prices, price types, categories, modifier groups (with pop-up, required and maximum counts), printer labels, hidden and non-revenue flags, and tax rates.
- Does not set tile colours, item descriptions or photos for online ordering, discounts, or which printer each label goes to. Those are dashboard steps; your setup guide lists them in order.
Finish by hand
- Colours. Inventory → Categories, open each tab and pick the swatch from your guide.
- Required modifiers. Inventory → Modifier groups. Confirm groups such as Size and Temp show Required 1, Max 1 and pop up automatically.
- Printers. Setup → Printers (or Kitchen Display). Assign each label from the guide to the station that cooks it. See kitchen printers and labels.
- Variable prices. Items priced "market" import as Variable; set a price now or leave the cashier to enter one.
- Online ordering. Copy descriptions from the guide into each item, add photos, and hide anything you do not sell online.
- Test. Ring one item from every tab on a register. Check the modifier pop-ups, the ticket routing and the receipt, then void the test order.
