Modifiers, combos and the pizza builder
Tap an item and its modifier screen opens. Required groups are marked, and the Done button stays grey until every required choice is made. That one rule keeps incomplete orders away from the kitchen.
The modifier screen
The modifier groups for the item run across the top as tabs. A required group carries a red badge with the number of picks it still needs, and the tab itself is red until the pick is made. Under the tabs are the options in the selected group.
The column on the left holds the mod tags: No, Light, Extra, Sub, On Side, Only and Splash, with All Mods to show every option at once. Tap a tag and then an option and the ticket reads "Extra Ranch" or "Sauce on side" without anyone typing a note. Instructions is still there for the request that no tag covers, and what you type prints on the kitchen ticket.
The action row along the bottom has Edit Price, Ungroup, Duplicate, Instructions, Remove, Reset, Hold and Send. Hold keeps the item on the ticket without firing it, so an appetizer and an entrée can go to the kitchen at different times. The quantity control at the top changes how many of the item you are modifying.
Nested modifiers
A choice can open another group. Pick "side salad" as the side for an entrée and a dressing group opens next. EPI calls these nested modifiers. Build one for any choice that has a choice of its own.
Default modifiers
An item can come with modifiers already selected: the sandwich's standard toppings, ticked in advance. Staff adjust from there with the mod tags instead of building the sandwich from nothing every time.
Combos
A combo shows its component groups across the top of the modifier screen in the same way: entrée, side, drink. Staff make one pick per group. A group can carry upcharges, so "substitute onion rings, add $1.50" lives inside the combo instead of as a separate item.
Pizza builder
The pizza builder is its own screen. It opens on the size group, then the topping groups. On the right is a drawing of the pie with buttons for Whole, Left Half, Right Half and the four quarters. Pick where the topping goes, then the topping; the shaded part of the pie shows where it landed and the ticket line reads, for example, "Left Half: Feta Cheese". Quarters can be switched off for the whole organization if you never sell them.
The pie is drawn the same way on the register ticket and on the kitchen ticket, so the cook sees which toppings go where without reading a list.
Buy X, get X specials
A special can be "buy a beer, get a shot": a trigger item, a reward item, a discount type such as 100% off the reward, and the days and times it applies.
